After Midsummer’s Day Kertu goes missing without a trace. Her entire family panics because Kertu is considered to be a simpleton due to her modest and closed nature. After a long search Kertu is found with the alcohol-loving womanizer Villu. Under the leadership of Kertu´s father the judgemental villagers accuse Villu of taking advantage of the woman. But what really happened on that night? The slowly unravelling truth is more shocking than anyone could ever imagine.
Writer and director Ilmar Raag was born on the small island where KERTU is set and tells a story of hidden relationships within a village community, abyss of family entanglement and an unusual love.
